Valentine's Day is a holiday that many seem to get frustrated with. It's a day of love and I personally love celebrating anything and everything. Valentine's Day is no different, and whilst love should be celebrated everyday, I personally love that there is a special day devoted to it. I also just want to say, that's not just be talking as someone in a relationship, because there have been many others where I was single and I've celebrated Galentine's Day instead. From the postnatal ward and my favourite rotation as a student, to the antenatal ward and my least favourite rotation as a student. Let's just say, I'm not quite looking forward to my final new rotation of my preceptorship.  Antenatal care has never been a favourite of mine, and antenatal high risk women just worry me. When the wards were merged for a couple of weeks, I pretty much purely had antenatal women, so I feel I have potentially already covered many of the aspects, but everything that could go wrong, pretty much did. In the space of a few hours on one shift, I had three emergencies, with a postpartum haemorrhage, an uncontrolled pre-eclamptic pregnant woman and a fetal tachycardia.  Whilst I was there briefly, I also felt very alone. I can't say I know the midwives there much but I personally don't think that they are all that supportive. I couldn't not include my home city in this series, so today I am talking about Wakefield. I always say that I was born in Pontefract, which is very true, but it also comes under Wakefield postcode wise. Then I moved to Wakefield itself when I was just 5 years old. Wakefield is a cathedral city in West Yorkshire, England. It sits on the River Calder at the eastern edge of the Pennines. It is known for it's trading in corn, coal mining and textiles. Wow! Here's some of my favourite things to do in the city. As a warning, as I go there all the time, I don't take pictures of places often, so I will try to update this in due course.  1. Visit Wakefield Cathedral. The cathedral in Wakefield is truly beautiful. It is set at the very centre of the city, with shops surrounding. The fact it is on a raised platform, with steps on all side, makes it stand out all the more.  2. Go shopping. You may have seen me previously talk about Beer 52 , and this is their sister company, Wine 52. They are the largest wine discovery club, with a monthly subscription costing £32 per box. Each month they have a different country in which they showcase, with this box being from Portugal. You can also select whether you want 3 bottles of red, white or mixed. I actually bought my first box at the end of November, but it's just taken a little while to get through all the bottles as I personally don't drink wine myself.  Of course, the box also comes with a magazine and two snacks. I much preferred the magazine here to the beer magazine and I felt it was more tailored to the female market. The snacks in this box were not nice. I could just about manage the cassava chips but the other's got thrown away.  We ended up getting the mixed box of wines, which came packaged safely and securely. My rotation on the postnatal ward is officially over and what a strange rotation it's been. Due to short staffing levels, I unfortunately didn't quite get the experience that I had anticipated and hoped for. It was planned for me to have two weeks of supernumerary, meaning that I wasn't meant to be classed in the numbers in order to be able to learn how the ward works and familiarise myself with care and guidelines. I started my rotation as the Covid-19 cases started rising with the new variant, so staffing was minimal.  My first shift had a number of students, so I worked with another newly qualified midwife who had not even been working 2 months herself so I felt it wasn't particularly fair to either of us. From there, it only got worse, as I got pulled to labour suite every single day on my next 6 shifts. Two of them were for half days, but nevertheless, meant it was very difficult for me to learn the ropes on the ward. We had agency staff who refused to be moved, n...

Another week, another city. This was a day trip we took last year together, as a little bit of a date trip. The name Lincoln is believed to derive from the Iron Age Celtic Lindon, meaning pool by the hill; a reference to the Brayford pool and the hill upon which the modern city stands. It's a city in the East Midlands, known for it's medieval cathedral and library. There's a large university in the city, as well as a number of attractions, so whilst it's not a hot spot for tourists, it makes a lovely day away.  1. Visit Lincoln Cathedral. The cathedral is truly beautiful from both the inside and outside. I walked around the the grounds and took in the architecture, whilst Luke paid for entry and enjoyed the inside.  2. Tour Lincoln Castle. So many of the English cities have castles. I haven't personally been, but I have heard great things.  3. Climb up Steep Hill.
