Is Gender Fluid?
I recently read a post on social media and it really got me thinking. Gender fluidity was brought up and I was honestly unconvinced.
“Gender Fluid” is a gender identity best described as a dynamic mix of male and female genders. A person who is Gender Fluid may always feel like a mix of the two traditional genders, but may feel more boy some days, and more girl other days.
Being Gender Fluid has nothing to do with which set of genitalia one has, nor their sexual orientation.
One of the key benefits of the term seems to be that those who identify as it say that it didn’t actually change anything about how they looked on the outside, but it did change how they feel on the inside. Which is fine. If people seek comfort in using an unnecessary word, fine.
Personally, as a scientific background I’m a firm believer in the fact that genetically humans are either male or female. We have an XX or an XY copy of chromosomes. Yes, there are some conditions where this isn’t the case but for simplification of the point, let’s not go into those. So my point is, gender is genetically predetermined almost from conception. I find it very difficult to understand how people can “feel like” the opposite gender to their genetic makeup and that’s an area I struggle with.
In my eyes, it’s not that gender fluidity is a real concept, it is simply that we shouldn’t apply gender stereotype rules and make anything be gender exclusive. That includes, makeup, clothes and activities.
If society didn’t have roles that were gendered historically, would it be a thing? If the answers no, as roles become more reversible, will it be a thing in the future? My argument is no. It’s an unnecessary addition to the English language and will become a thing of the past and personal choices become more respected. I genuinely belief it’s one of those almost made-up diagnoses to simply define what is unusual within an individual. If something has a label it tends to be more accepted.
So what’s your thoughts of gender fluidity?
Please note: I know this topic can be quite sensitive and it’s not necessarily a topic that I’m hugely knowledgable on, so while I’ve talked about my opinion on the matter, if you want to share your own ideas in the comments I would really enjoy reading them, especially if you’re goal is to educate people on the topic. I also know that many people can be extremely passionate about it so all that I ask is that you be respectful in your discussion and do so in a polite manner.
