An Interview with Colin & Caroline!

A few weeks ago, I shared an exciting review of Colin & Caroline's new single "Wish I Was". Today we're celebrating again, this time with an interview!

Before we start I just want to say thank you so much for agreeing to answer some questions for this interview. I absolutely loved being apart of your latest single release and I’m so excited to be able to share this next song with my readers again.

Firstly, I wanted to share a little bit about your journey.

So you guys went to high school together and then almost separated before meeting again. How did you end up deciding to sing together? Was it a difficult decision?
It was definitely not a difficult decision :)  We had both been pursuing music in our own directions for many years after high school, and then ended up bumping into each other at a local spot back in Richmond.  We talked about how cool it would be to collaborate on a cover song, and record a YouTube video for it, so we did and had a blast, and because of the amazing feedback from viewers and listeners we decided to do did it again.  Soon after, we began co-writing original songs together and officially formed our duo “Colin & Caroline”.

What was it that first attracted you to each other? Was there always some chemistry or did it become more obvious over time?
We played together for about 2 and 1/2 years as good friends before truly recognizing our feelings for each other.  People often asked and assumed that we were together, but we kept things completely as friends for several years before realizing we had fallen in love in the process.  It hit like a rock when it did!

What’s your favourite thing and worst thing about working together?
Our favorite thing about working together is that we also get to be together.  We get to create music and do what we love as a team which also continues to strengthen our personal relationship.  This can be the difficult part too, because we are so close and so honest with one each other that when we have different opinions or ideas it can be hard to land in the exact right place.  But we always seem to do it, and I think it’s what makes us “Colin & Caroline” :)

Onto the music!

Your first EP is going to be released very soon. How excited are you right now?
SO. EXCITED.!!

Has it been a long time coming? When did you start working on it?
Colin and I have been writing the songs for this EP for about a year and 1/2, along with several others that we’ve decided to hold onto for later.  Our typical process is to release songs single by single, but for this EP, we wanted to release our new originals as a collection in order to tell more of a story.

What’s your favourite song on the album?
Oh gosh, that’s hard.  I love all of them… But “Perfect Storm” and “Do It All Again” the most I think.  Colin’s favorite is “Stories”. We are really so proud of all 5 of the songs, and the way they came together during the recording process was incredible.

I’m sure you get asked this question all the time but if someone wanted to pursue a career in music what would you say?
Run away!  No… I am kidding.  I would say play, write, and perform songs you are proud to share with the world.  Keep growing your knowledge and skills along the way, and play what inspires you.  The rest will fall into place, and if you truly love it, music will be something you are happy to do regardless of whether or not you make it a full-time career.  Don’t let the love for making it happen burn out!

But today, the most important thing is your new single! I’ve been lucky enough to already hear “Perfect Storm” and I absolutely love it. I think so far, it might be my favourite song of yours. My favourite line is definitely “the eye of a perfect storm”. It’s such a beautiful metaphor and I love that many of your songs have these visual representations in them.

Like I’ve said, as this post goes live, you’ll already be celebrating the release of your second single, in your own words what’s this song about?
“Perfect Storm” describes a more or less “toxic” relationship.  One person has begun to realize that they have been stuck living in only the blissful, peaceful and happy parts of the relationship (i.e. “the eye of the storm”), but is beginning to recognize that the negative parts outweigh the good.  Over time, that person realizes that their partner won’t change their ways for the better, and they can no longer wait around for them to do so.  It defines how people have choices to make within every relationship, both good and bad, and even when the right choice is sometimes difficult, following your heart is always the answer.

How did you come up with the concept for the music video? Was there any artistic differences?
Our videographer, Daniel, helped us come up with the concept of the video after hearing the song.  The video itself is very simple, but is absolutely beautiful and completely succeeds in evoking emotion through the lighting and setting.  It also conveys the message and mood of the song without being overly literal.

Why did you select it to be your second single to be released?
It is very different in sound than our first single “Wish I Was”.  We thought it would be good to diversify the songs we released as singles off the EP, and this one is not only a powerful song, but it is different than the first.  :)

Once again, congratulations! I can’t wait to hear more music from you and I’m sure everyone will love “Perfect Storm”.
Thanks for featuring us Hannah!  Loved chatting about our new tunes <3 - Caroline
