Welfare Wednesday: Studying at Home!

With so many people studying from home I thought I'd give a few tips of my own. Exams are stressful and the exam season is just about starting again. Due to the current situation, examinations are happening a little differently to normal, so hopefully some of these tips will help on that front too.

First of all, when working from home, it is incredibly important to set SMART goals. Read here to find out more about them but they should be specific to each task, relevant and time limited. The best advice I can give is to write a list of a few tasks that can be completed the next day. That way, you exactly what is expected of you the next day and you can tick the list as it is accomplished. Make sure you prioritise tasks.

Importantly, it is really useful to have a private study space. Make a study area which is free from distractions, comfortable and if possible, private. Let your family know when you are working so that they will - hopefully - stay away. If you're struggling, make sure you reach out for support. Universities are putting on a vast array of services in this difficult time period and there is always someone available. Start with your personal tutor, programme lead or even the counselling service.

Don't forget to look after yourself! Self-care is incredibly important during these times. Take regular breaks and make sure you keep at your hobbies (exercise, reading, playing instruments) so that you don't get burnt out. Fundamentally, be kind to yourself. If you don't complete all your tasks of the day, it isn't the end of the world and it isn't life or death. Often we are our own worst critics so speak to yourself as you would speak to your friend or child.

Remember, even though we are socially distancing and can't see friends or family, we are incredibly lucky that we live in a world where we have so much technology at our finger tips. Pick up the phone, connect via video calls and conference calls with large groups. Whilst we shouldn't spend all day every day on it, take the moments to appreciate and reach out to those important people in your life.
