Travelling Nightmare, San Francisco and Alcatraz Island! / USA and Canada 2024

A travel day from hell was rewarded with the most gorgeous hotel, and my first day in San Francisco was spent at Alcatraz!

After getting next to no sleep on the night bus and it arriving late, I headed to the One World Observatory on the Subway. I had run and emailed customer services to see if I could go again for free, due to the previous zero visibility experience and was very thankful that they actually said yes and gave me a new ticket. I could literally only go for 30 minutes, so I skipped the initial indoor parts and headed straight up to the observation deck. The second those blinds lifted, I knew I'd made the right decision!

Afterwards, I headed straight back to my New York hotel. I was planning on getting the Subway but there were issues, so instead I walked it. When I got to the hotel, I couldn't find my ticket and they couldn't find my bag but I had an Air Tag tracking so I knew it was there. Luckily, they finally found it and then I headed back to the Subway with more problems. For some reason, there was no direct train running so I asked a worker what to do as City Mapper for once, wasn't actually being helpful. I did as instructed and the first few stops were familiar, so I settled down.

As I was meant to be nearing the end, I started to pay a bit more attention and found that I didn't recognise where I was and I had gone 40 minutes in the wrong direction. I was so frustrated and upset. I was now almost an hour behind schedule. City Mapper told me I needed to walk to a different station so I had to walk and carry my suitcase up multiple stairs as there was no lift or escalator or ramp, and then I couldn't find it and I was panicking I was going to miss my flight, so I decided to get an Uber. Instead of the $15 journey, it ended up costing over $100 and I was so upset, but I just made it through security as my flight was boarding, and thankfully my suitcase arrived safe and sound.

I was then going to get public transport instead of an Uber to my hotel to save some money back, but because of the San Francisco heatwave, the tracks were overheating and it was going to take almost an extra hour over an Uber so I decided against saving the $20.

Once I got to the hotel, I got a quick shower to freshen up and wash my hair, then headed out for a meal. I was originally going to get a takeaway to take back to the room but the Thai I was interested in was closed, so I found the nearest place that looked nice. It was still warm, but I really fancied a home comfort meal and so was ready to enjoy some yummy carrots, chicken and mash. I also got a takeaway brownie for later, but it was a little disappointing.
Afterwards, despite being tired, I wanted to make the most of my time, so I headed to the city centre and walked through all the lit up government buildings which were beautiful. I was so shocked to see a Handmaid's Tale ballet production. If I had known, I defintely would have got tickets for it, but sadly it was the last day.

The next day, I walked in to the tourist hot spot of Pier 39. I headed to the Big Bus Tours to collect my ticket, then headed to Alcatraz for my pre-booked timeslot. I'll share a full review of Alcatraz tomorrow so see that for more details!

Once finished, I came back to San Francisco and got on the Big Bus Tour. It was so busy and so many people were not allowed on the bus at each stop so I decided not to get off today. Instead, I did the full route and I'm so glad I did because it gave me the opportunity to decide what to do tomorrow, but also I only just made it back in time for the Sunset Tour.

The Sunset Tour start time was supposed to give me time to get some food first, but when I got off the day time bus, there were already people queuing, so instead I went to the toilet and then the 7/11 next door for a drink and a snack. Again, I'll share the Sunset Tour review later, but it was beautiful and going to Treasure Island was such a beautiful lookout spot over the San Francisco skyline.
