Be Present

“Solitude is strength. To depend on the presence on others is a weakness” - Paul Brunton.

There were times (more like fleeting moments!) on holiday when I felt alone. Lonely almost. And then I was quickly reminded while surrounded by bickering families just how much I appreciate solitude. I’m grateful I have the independence and ability to travel solo but I’m also glad I can enjoy my own company.

One of the things I’m grateful for is that despite spending a lot of time alone, I really do appreciate the time I spend with family and friends. It’s not about the quantity but about the quality. All too often you see family, friends and partners spending time together, yet not saying a word. Even when I ate alone, I would spend the majority of the time interacting with others and yet too many people were literally glued to screens. Partners were on their mobiles on social media, children were on their iPads watching television. Sometimes I would watch a whole meal and realise they didn’t say more than a sentence to each other the whole time.

That's sad.

Next time you're with someone, be with them. Interact, talk and be happy. Live in the moment.
